School Aycliffe Wetland started life as a neglected area of land at the back of School Aycliffe. The site was selected for this project as it formed a natural drainage sink and was unsuitable for other forms of development.

Creation of School Aycliffe Wetland involved initial topographical survey of the site to establish levels, then re-profiling of the site to create a range of wetland features from permanent standing water, through seasonal standing water to marginal and damp grassland. This served to maximise the diversity of wetland habitat conditions and the overall value of the site to a large number of aquatic and wetland plants and animals.

Access features were then created including a circular footpath, boardwalk and decking enabling visitors of all ages and levels of ability to explore the wetland in complete safety.

The site won the Durham Environment Award for best conservation project and was later declared a County Wildlife Site because of the high biodiversity that developed across the site not long after its creation.
